Fine of up to €2,000 for selling energy drinks to children in Bulgaria

Fine of up to €2,000 for selling energy drinks to children in Kyustendil.

A fine of up to €2,000 will be imposed for selling energy drinks to students in Kyustendil and the surrounding municipality, local authorities and police announced.

The mayor of the city, Ognyan Atanasov, said that a report had been received from a school principal indicating that such drinks were being sold to minors.

The municipality has also sent letters to tenants of municipal properties where vending machines are installed. The letters emphasize that the sale of energy drinks and tobacco products to minors is prohibited.

A joint meeting has already been held with representatives from the Ministry of Interior, the district prosecutor’s office, commissions for combating anti-social behavior and drug prevention, school principals, and the State Agency for Child Protection. Inspections are set to begin, and violations will be sanctioned accordingly.

Mayor Atanasov also warned that products with high caffeine content—such as energy drinks—can have a harmful impact on children’s health, urging both business owners and sellers to act responsibly.
