A tragic accident occurred on Thursday around 8:30 a.m., in which former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Alexander Manninger lost his life. The fatal crash took place in the municipality of Nußdorf am Haunsberg, when a local train carrying around 25 passengers collided with a van driven by Manninger, according to Salzburger Nachrichten. The news has shocked the football community, especially fans of Arsenal and Juventus.
The passengers and the train driver were not injured. According to Matthias Ganisl, commander of the Volunteer Fire Department in Nußdorf, the collision happened at a small, technically unsecured railway crossing.
“This is a gravel road that crosses the local railway line. If you continue along that road, you reach several weekend houses and fish ponds,” Ganisl explained.
According to reports, Manninger was a passionate fisherman and was on his way to the ponds that morning.
Traffic accident expert Gerhard Kronreif has been tasked by the Salzburg prosecutor’s office with conducting a detailed analysis of the causes of the crash. It is known that the crossing was marked with a “stop” sign, and investigators are also examining whether it was constructed in accordance with regulations.
Around 20 firefighters from Nußdorf took part in the intervention, assisted by colleagues from Anthering. The Red Cross responded with the emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 6” and two ambulance vehicles.
